The new power plant not only fully meets the energy needs of the mining complex but also provides a reliable electricity supply to Tsogttsetsii soum, which is far from the central power grid. In our country, with its dispersed population, weak infrastructure development and extreme climate, no new power plant has been built in the past 20 years or so. This development is all the more notable for having been built in a short time by the skill of Mongolian engineers alone. To put it simply, if the electricity consumption of one aimag is around 3 MW, a new source has been created that is capable of meeting the electricity consumption of the centres of six aimags on average.

Project management for the power plant was carried out by MCS International, which has almost 20 years of experience in the domestic energy sector, and more than 1,500 people from around 120 domestic companies in total took part in the project work. While in countries such as China, with highly developed infrastructure solutions and favourable weather conditions, a similar power plant is built within 24–30 months, the Ukhaa Khudag power plant was built at high speed and to a high standard in just 16 months, excluding the winter season when construction work is impossible. The new power plant also creates more than 140 new jobs.

In terms of technology, a dry cooling system with zero water consumption, particularly well suited to the water-scarce Gobi, has been successfully introduced; compared with the water cooling systems commonly used at power plants currently operating in Mongolia, this allows water to be used four to five times more efficiently.
