Energy Resources LLC ranked 3rd in the TOP 150 enterprises selection
In the TOP 150 enterprises selection held for the 11th year by the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI) together with the Government of Mongolia, the national mining company Energy Resources LLC took third place.
The selection is based on many criteria, including the amount of tax paid to the state, job creation, contribution to national social and economic development, social responsibility and the standard of corporate governance. This year the MCS Group took first place and led the national enterprises, while Mongolyn Alt Corporation (MAK) was ranked second.
The organisers consider that Energy Resources LLC, a relatively young company, has entered the top three of the national enterprises selection and reached a level where it makes a substantial contribution to the country’s economic development thanks to the scale of the development it has achieved rapidly in a short time, sound management decisions and integrated operational planning.
In 2009, the first year of operations at the Ukhaa Khudag mine, the Company paid ₮13 billion to the state; in 2010 it contributed ₮54 billion and in 2011 ₮115 billion to the state budget. To put the tax the Company paid in 2011 alone in simple terms, it is more than enough to make up the annual budgets of all 21 aimags of Mongolia.
Today Energy Resources LLC has reached 2,300 permanent employees, and more than 3,000 people are employed within the Ukhaa Khudag mine development. In addition, around 700 domestic enterprises in total work with the Ukhaa Khudag project as subcontractors and suppliers. All of this shows that domestic enterprises have built their capacity in a short time and have fully reached a level at which they can shoulder part of the national and social load and play a substantial role.
Professionals note that Energy Resources LLC’s comprehensive delivery of its social responsibility policy is a benchmark not only in the mining sector but nationally. Over the past three years, in delivering infrastructure projects at Ukhaa Khudag such as Mongolia’s first coal washing plant, a power plant, a paved road, a water supply system and a housing district, the Company aligned them closely with local development policy and town planning, laying the foundations for a future town to grow up around the mine. As a result, Tsogttsetsii soum in Umnugobi aimag, which had been without electricity for many years, now has a reliable power supply, and within the mine’s water supply system the question of clean drinking water for the soum’s population has also been resolved. Furthermore, the social needs of employees travelling between Umnugobi and Ulaanbaatar have been fully met: they have settled in comfortable homes and can educate and bring up their children at the newly built primary school and kindergarten complex. Energy Resources LLC is also working, through joint investment with the aimag and the local authorities, to build and commission a modern education complex in Tsogttsetsii soum with a school for 640 children, a kindergarten for 100 children and a dormitory for 150 children, which will make a real contribution to the development of a soum with a growing population.
