Mongolia to compete in a team sport at the Olympics for the first time in its history

On 1 November 2019 in Utsunomiya, Japan, FIBA — the International Basketball Federation — announced the first teams to qualify for the 3x3 basketball event at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.

Mongolia’s women’s 3x3 basketball team qualified directly for the Olympics and will, for the first time, compete against the world’s best in a team sport on behalf of the country.


Our men’s national team, meanwhile, was named first among the 20 countries that will compete for the remaining three Olympic places. On ranking points the Mongolian men’s team would have qualified directly, but the host nation, Japan, used its wild-card entitlement. As a result, the Mongolian men’s team will compete for an Olympic place at a tournament in India in March next year.
